Planting a billion trees makes a great photo, but a tree is not a forest and a forest is not a number. A look at why counting trees is easy and growing forests is hard.

Somewhere in the Sahel, a dignitary presses a sapling into dry soil as cameras click and children cheer. A drone rises to record the “millionth tree.” From above, the desert appears to bloom. From below, goats nibble at the stems and the planting crew packs up before the first rain. Tree-planting has become the moral shorthand for saving the planet. The act is visible, photogenic, and emotionally satisfying. Yet a tree is not a forest, and a forest is not a number. What if the global rush to re-green the Earth—one billion trees here, a trillion there—risks repeating the very pattern it claims to undo: the reduction of living complexity into a single metric?
This essay looks at the mirage forest through three intertwined lenses:
- the systems thinking that reveals why planting isn’t restoring,
- the moral economy that profits from good intentions, and
- the cultural symbolism that makes us worship trees while misunderstanding them. Each lens exposes a different layer of illusion—and a different path toward something truer.
Part I — Systems Thinking: Planting Isn’t Restoring
The Monoculture Mistake When planners prioritize speed, they often choose a single fast-growing species—eucalyptus in India, acacia in the Sahel, pine in China. These trees pull water from aquifers, acidify soils, and crowd out native shrubs that feed pollinators. A forest’s true resilience comes from diversity: layers of canopy, understory, fungi, and insects interacting over time. Monocultures may look green from space, but they function more like tree farms than forests.
The Metric Trap Success is frequently measured in seedlings planted rather than trees surviving. A campaign boasting ten million new trees might lose eight million within two years. Yet donors rarely fund the slow, less glamorous work of maintenance—watering, weeding, protecting saplings from grazing animals, and monitoring for years afterward. Ecology rewards patience; funding cycles reward press releases.
Unintended Consequences The Great Green Wall project across Africa illustrates both ambition and ambiguity. Envisioned as an eleven-nation belt of trees to halt desertification, it now operates as hundreds of smaller experiments—some thriving through local stewardship, others failing where rainfall or governance faltered. Similarly, in Chile and Portugal, aggressive reforestation with flammable species intensified later wildfires. Restoration done without systems thinking can backfire spectacularly.
Restoration as Relationship True regeneration begins below ground—with microbes binding soil particles, mycorrhizal fungi trading nutrients, and native species co-evolving over centuries. Humans can’t “build” that complexity; we can only nurture the conditions that let it re-emerge. The shift is from engineering to gardening, from control to collaboration.

Follow the Money Carbon-credit markets reward visibility, not viability. It costs far less to announce a million trees than to verify a living forest twenty years later. Projects in Kenya, Brazil, and Indonesia have sold “offsets” for carbon supposedly sequestered by forests that later burned, died, or were never planted at all. The incentive structure is backward—profit arrives first, proof much later, if ever.
Verification programs like the Gold Standard or Verified Carbon Standard exist, yet they depend on data supplied by project developers themselves. Satellite audits can catch gross fraud but rarely track species composition or community impact. When tree planting becomes a commodity, ecological success turns into an accounting fiction.
Land and Power Large-scale reforestation often demands large tracts of land. In parts of Africa and South America, governments have leased or sold “degraded” lands to investors who promise carbon profits. But those same areas frequently support herders, gatherers, and Indigenous peoples whose stewardship has kept them semi-wild for centuries. The rhetoric of restoration can thus mask a new wave of land dispossession—a kind of green colonialism justified by climate math.
When carbon credits are traded in London or New York, who truly benefits? Rarely the people living under the canopy. In Brazil’s Acre state, rubber-tapper cooperatives have protested projects that limit access to their ancestral forests while funneling profits to outside brokers. In Kenya’s Mau Complex, promises of reforestation led to mass evictions of forest-dwelling communities.
Beyond Green Accounting A genuine moral economy would define success not by tons of carbon but by quality of life—biodiversity restored, water cycles repaired, local incomes sustained. When residents become co-owners rather than hired laborers, forests endure.
- In Nepal’s community forestry model, locals manage more than two million hectares, sharing revenue from timber and non-timber products while keeping poachers and fires at bay.
- Costa Rica’s national payments for ecosystem services tie compensation to verified biodiversity outcomes, not merely to tree counts.
- Brazil’s Xingu Seed Network hires Indigenous and rural women to collect native seeds, re-establishing genetic diversity while providing cash income.
These examples prove that economics can serve ecology when designed around reciprocity, not extraction. The moral arc of reforestation bends toward justice only when those who live with the trees also live from them.

We love trees because they make goodness visible. They are upright, patient, generous—an image of moral order rooted in the ground. Across cultures, trees symbolize everything we wish to believe about ourselves: the tree of life, the Bodhi tree, the family tree. But symbolism can blur science. We celebrate planting days as if virtue could be measured in saplings.
The spectacle of planting offers emotional closure where ecological work is only beginning. A politician with a shovel, a crowd with matching T-shirts, a drone shot for social media—these rituals comfort us because they are finite. Real restoration, by contrast, is endless. It demands stewardship that outlives the photo op.
Our fixation on trees also distorts priorities. Mangroves, peatlands, and grasslands often store more carbon and support richer biodiversity, yet they lack the charisma of tall trunks. In Kenya’s Rift Valley, a restored wetland might save more species than a thousand eucalyptus, but wetlands are harder to romanticize. A meadow rarely inspires a selfie.
Indigenous traditions treat planting as a covenant, not a campaign. Among the Māori, each tree planted carries kinship obligations. In parts of India, villagers hold Van Mahotsav festivals where planting is followed by years of collective tending. These customs recognize what modern culture forgets: to plant is to promise.
If reforestation is to become restoration, we must move from symbolism to relationship—from tree worship to ecosystem humility. We must learn to love forests not for what they represent but for what they require of us.

As Humboldt wrote two centuries ago, nature is “a living whole animated by a single breath.” Our duty is not to inflate that breath with hype, but to keep it steady.

1. Switzerland’s “Lost Pines” (1885–1952)
An ambitious afforestation campaign planted 448,000 Swiss stone pine (Pinus cembra) seedlings across the canton of Fribourg to re-establish high-altitude forests. By the 2000s, only 652 trees survived—a success rate of barely 0.15 percent. The species had been planted outside its natural ecological range, and without the birds that disperse its seeds, natural regeneration never followed.

Fast-growing monocultures—mainly poplar and pine—drained groundwater, while high evaporation and poor soils caused widespread die-off. These ecosystems depend on open canopies and seasonal fires; tree planting sometimes reduced biodiversity and strained water resources instead of restoring them.
