Biologists call such zones ecotones: transitional spaces where distinct ecosystems overlap. Yet what makes them remarkable is not simply diversity, but the tension that diversity requires. Every adaptation at the edge demands negotiation—light and shadow, salt and soil, prey and refuge. It is this constant negotiation that drives abundance and diversity.

In that sense, the ecotone is not a boundary; it is an engine. It shows that vitality comes not from purity but from proximity—where differences interact, clash, and evolve into something new. Humboldt saw this principle everywhere: mountains as vertical ecotones, the atmosphere as a gradient of exchange, and even human society as a living continuum.
