Your brain is a prediction machine built from your experiences. So what happens when a group shares the same experiences and the same blind spots? A systems look at why diverse teams see more.

Lesson Flow (45–50 minutes)

1. Opening Reflection (5 minutes) Prompt students to write briefly: Describe a time when two people interpreted the same event differently. What prior experiences shaped those interpretations?

2. Concept Introduction (10 minutes) Explain how the nervous system forms priors based on context, consequences, trust, and risk. Discuss how different environments produce different predictive expectations.

3. Case Analysis in Pairs (10 minutes) Provide a short scenario: A diverse team is reviewing a new community policy. One person focuses on cost, another on safety, another on trust, another on historical harm, and another on access.

Students identify what priors each viewpoint might be grounded in.

4. Synthesis Discussion (10 minutes) As a class, map how the differing perspectives expand predictive capacity. Highlight how a homogeneous team might miss or misinterpret certain risks.

5. Closing Question (5 minutes) Ask students to respond verbally or in writing: If diversity produces friction, is the friction a sign of disorder or evidence of learning? Explain your reasoning.
