Tunnel as Transformation The Gotthard Base Tunnel, completed in 2016 after nearly two decades of work, demonstrates how a single infrastructure project can redefine geography. By linking northern and southern Europe with a high-speed corridor beneath the Alps, it shortened travel times, reduced freight emissions, and symbolically erased one of the continent’s great natural barriers.

But transformation has many layers. Environmental scientists note the staggering material footprint of such projects: millions of cubic meters of excavated rock, massive energy consumption, and intricate groundwater management to avoid draining alpine aquifers.
